Benefits
A turbo session involves riding your own bike whilst attached to a stationary turbo trainer, which has a number of benefits:
- constant conditions (not wet and cold)
- controllable levels of effort - great for interval trianing
- traffic-free training- no cars to knock you off
- focus on physical conditioning, rather than bike-handling skills
- ability to focus on pedalling technique and cadence
- different abilities can train together
Equipment
To participate in these session you will need the following:
- Bike - make sure it is clean for use in the sports hall
- Turbo Trainer
- Front wheel block / riser
- Turbo Training Mat if you have one
- Sweat cover - if you don't have one of these bring a spare towel to drape over your handlebars and headset - sweat does nasty things to a bike
- Bike shoes
- Towel for wiping away the sweat from yourself and the floor after the session - it will get hot - you will sweat and you will be expected to leave the area where you train in a clean condition at the end of each session.
Although not compulsory you will benefit more from these sessions if you have:
- a heart rate monitor; and
- a cadence sensor fitted to your bike
