Derby Junior Triathlon Post Race Statement – TriStar Start Girls Category

I apologise for the delay in getting back to you but I have take time to ensure I have properly understand all the issues that the girls faced on the run course. There were two main issues that affected the competitors which I have explained below.

The TriStar Start run course was supposed to be two small laps. Why were some competitors directed to complete the large lap loop?
The marshals were aware that the TriStar Start competitors all had numbers above 190 and these were to be directed to stay on the small lap. Numbers 201 -212 were handmade and it became apparent that they were not clearly visible from a distance. This meant the first competitors to approach the marshals at the junction of the small lap with the large lap loop, with numbers above 200, were mistaken to be a race number in the hundreds and were subsequently directed onto the large lap loop. This mistake was noticed before the end of the race and corrected.

Why were some competitor’s directed to the finish on the first lap?
The marshals at the junction of the small lap and large lap loop were telling people to go straight on (except for the few they mistakenly directed to the large lap loop). Just after where the large lap loop rejoined the small lap the competitors need to turn right to complete a second lap or go straight on to the finish. There were no marshals at this junction and it was the responsibility of the competitor to either go to the finish or complete a second lap. The only people telling the competitors to go the finish were the lap counters.

The combination of these two issues meant that we had competitors completing a variety of different courses: 1 small lap; 1 large lap; 1 large lap and 1 small lap; and 2 small laps. Our decisions on the final results have not been taken lightly and we have sought guidance from the race referee, marshals and others involved in the race and course design before rushing to our final conclusions.

For those competitors who were directed onto the large lap loop in error you have my unreserved apology – by ensuring all competitors had clear numbers and by improving the marking on the course this issue could have been avoided.

For those competitors that completed only one lap there are improvements that could be made to the marking of the course/providing extra marshals but it is ultimately the competitor’s responsibility to ensure they have completed the correct number of laps.

Final Results

  • All those competitors that completed 2 laps (of any size) your results stands.
  • All those competitors that only completed 1 lap (of any size) did not complete the race distance and are therefore disqualified.
  • No times have been adjusted – in accordance with BTF guidance and the race rules.
  • These final results will be used in the East Midlands Series.

As race director I am truly sorry for the issues that the athletes faced which we could avoided and promise that these mistakes will not be made again.

Best wishes
Toby Mansfield
